Relaxed
buffet lunch in New
College Hall.
The name of the college often strikes visitors as odd
for an institution more than 620 years old. It is referred
to in this manner because its original "official"
name - the College of St Mary - is the same as that
of Oriel College. Hence "the new college of St
Mary".

Lecture
by Sir Peter Atkins on the Great Questions of the Universe
and his most recent book, Galileo's
Finger.
Professor Peter Atkins is Smith Kline Beecham Fellow
and Tutor in Physical Chemisty. He was educated at the
University of Leicester, where he read Chemistry. After
his PhD (in electron spin resonance) he went to the
University of California, Los Angeles as a Harkness
Fellow, and returned to Oxford in 1965 as Fellow of
Lincoln College and University Lecturer in Physical
Chemistry.
Tea and coffee in the garden.
Optional punting lessons on the River Isis departing
from Magdalene Bridge Boat House.

A punt is a long, narrow boat propelled
with a long pole by the "punter" who stands
at the back of the boat. The punter and puntees can
then take a serpentine route on the Cherwell river past
the Botanical Gardens and down beside Christchurch Meadows
to where the tributary runs into the Thames (which for
some reason is called the Isis as it flows through Oxford).
Punting is quite easy once you've got the hang of it,
but students and tourists alike are frequently bedeviled
by the punting pole, which can get stuck in mud, by
ramming into either bank on a regular basis or by colliding
with other sub-standard punters! |

Private
Concert by the Christ
Church Choir in Christ Church Cathedral.
Christ Church Cathedral Choir is 500 years old and
unique in the world. There are twelve men and sixteen
boys in the Choir along with two organists. The boys
are selected for their musical ability and attend Christ
Church Cathedral School. Of the men, six are professionals
(the lay clerks), and six are undergraduates (the academical
clerks).
Gourmet dinner in the Hall of Corpus
Christi College.
Richard Fox, Bishop of Winchester, founded Corpus Christi
College in 1517, and was responsible for the construction
of the buildings of the main quadrangle, in the center
of which is an elaborate sundial with the Pelican, a
symbol of the Eucharist adopted by Fox, perched on the
top. Corpus Christi is the smallest Oxford college,
with about 220 undergraduates, 100 graduates and 40
Fellows. |

The
Old Bank Hotel, Oxford.
The
recently opened Old Bank Hotel (which used to be a Barkley's
bank surprise surprise!) now sets the standard for modern,
comfortable and stylish accommodation in Oxford. Located
on the High St, it offers the best of both the historic
old city and the modern, vibrant social scene. There
are 42 bedrooms in total, all different but all “design”
in approach. |
